6 Sep. - Castlerigg
Image: Castlerigg Stone Circle
Showers + sun: Ill timed + well.
A soggy farewell to the boy, concern for his welfare, both immediate (chill) + London onward. But news comes back through the day in snippets - warm, not lost, comfy - reassuring.
So onto new scenes in Keswick + a launch 'Lake trip' on Derwent Water. Dry seats, shelter + changing views whilst we eat sandwiches + nuts, observe the people.
A stop at Booths for book, map + mintcake. Cheese (local) to have on our oatcakes.
Then the climb out of town to Castlerigg Stone Circle - high-set + surrounded by fells dotted with sheep.
I walk the circle, touching each stone, shelter from a shower.
Toward the stone stile, signs of old furrows + a plough-marked stray stone.
Notes: Our son was heading home to Australia, his leave expired, via a weekend in London. I know mintcake is the traditional Lake District energy hit, but give me chocolate any day. We thrilled to the living history of walking upon evidence of ancient ridge and furrow ploughing.
