18 Sep. - Shrewsbury

Image: Shrewsbury Square from under the Market Hall, including rear view of statue of Clive of India - perhaps not so gentle as the current local 'lads'?

The city encircled by the Severn, once walled + towered - defensible - but now multiply bridged - English + Welsh Bridges, Greyfriars + Frankwell, Kingsland + Port Hill.
The walls, now remnant only + giving shelter + warmth to vegetable + fruit tree allotments - rich with pear, fig, apple.

The heights of the town centre crowned with tall trees in a small park - once the market square - now surrounded by the Tudor buildings of Bear Steps.
A hall, tight stairs, over-hanging balcony with a view down Grope Lane - once more colourfully + precisely named!

The city clean, placid, yet still vibrant with young students + a clear pride in its Tudor heritage.
The 'new' stone market building restored + filled with diners.

Last night beers with some local 'lads' at The Loggerheads - named for the three leopard heads on the city arms.
Loud but fun, burly but gentle.

Notes: A wonderfully compact town to wander around and through on foot, via riverside path and bridge, lane and place, crescent and cop. And the ales, as ever in Britain, brilliant!
